![]() ![]() Looking back to the palette I used to explain ramping, the green and blue meet at and share the 3rd shade. Either way, you want to always shift your darker shades to purple. If it is green or anything counter-clockwise, shift to purple through teal and blue. If it is yellow or anything clockwise from it, shift to purple through orange and red. This is a crude diagram, but these are essential how you want to shift your hues. This color bar shows the dynamic range of the hues in the second palette. This results in your darker shades appearing “cooler”, as shadows would. This is achieved by pushing your darker shades’ hues closer to purple and your brighter shades being farther away from it. It looks much more vibrant and natural, and ultimately more interesting to look at. Here is that same green palette with hue shifting (and some edits to saturation and brightness for the sake of value consistency, which I’ll touch on later.) It looks fine and is certainly functional. This green palette has one consistent hue throughout. This ramping works because of another color technique called hue shifting. On top of the 3 sets of 3, I have another set of 4. However, on the right, shows the ramps of each of the colors, and how they intersect and share shades, saving colors. On the left, it appears to have far more than 16 colors. However, you can get pretty creative with your palettes through different techniques. Using 3 colors with 3 shades each is a fairly safe option with some fair flexibility, while also being easy to recolor. The outline color should be your darkest color. Make sure these colors are not darker than the outline color. This leaves you with 9 shades to do whatever else you want with. ![]() You have 16 colors to work with, including the mandatory outline and transparent background color. I then blended thinned layers of Khorne Red, Flat Red, Bright Orange, Flat Yellow and White.I started with the same techniques as with the glyphs above.The very inner runes need to be especially bright so mix Flat Yellow with White and add thin layers to draw the runes Finish the fire with Smokey Ink on the tips (diluting the ink with matt medium or glaze medium).The idea is for the centre to be bright yellow, moving gradually to red at the outer tips Don't do too large an area at once as it must be blended quickly. For the fiery sword I based the whole sword Flat Yellow then created a mix colour with with Flat Red and wet blended all three colours.Add gloss varnish (the rest of the mini has matt varnish).The same glaze can be used for the fiery glyphs in the model, cover both the white and the surrounding red and also on the OSL effects on the mini itself. Keep adding glazes until there is no hard line between the colours. Add the glaze to the lava, especially the line between red and yellow. Mix Bright Orange & Flat Yellow and dilute with glaze medium.Also use the Khorne Red to surround any runes.I also used a glaze of this (by heavily diluting with Vallejo Glaze Medium) and added to the close parts of the mini to begin the OSL effects Khorne Red over most of the Red Leather, leaving just some on the rocky edges.Overlap both the white lava and the black rock. I actually used an old pot of GW Bestial Brown but any reddy brown would work. ![]() Make sure any other fire areas are primed white.
